SAIC Volkswagen's ID.ERA 5S is selling out right after its launch, with sales and marketing executive Fu Qiang saying the model has been flooded with orders since it debuted at the Chengdu auto show, and the company is offering 100 yuan (about $15) a day in V beans for late deliveries, up to 3,000 yuan, while photos shared by a blogger showed some dealers had even sold their display cars.
The reason is simple value for money, since the ID.ERA 5S is the first plug-in hybrid mid-size sedan in the ID.ERA family, with an official price of 119,900 to 149,900 yuan (about $17,870 to $22,340) that drops to a starting price of 89,900 yuan (about $13,400) after benefits.
The car measures 4,836 mm long, 1,880 mm wide and 1,505 mm tall on a 2,766 mm wheelbase, sitting between the Lamando L and the Passat, with a coupe-style fastback shape, a full-width illuminated light bar with a lit badge and semi-hidden door handles.
On the smart side, it runs the Xingyun driver-assist system on a Horizon Journey 6M chip and supports highway and city NOA, or Navigate on Autopilot, making it the first Volkswagen-badged sedan in the world with city NOA and the only car in its 120,000-yuan class with the feature, which is exactly what lets it stand up to Chinese rivals.
Power comes from a plug-in hybrid system pairing a 1.5L engine with a front motor, with 80 kW (about 107 hp) from the engine and 130 kW (about 174 hp) peak from the motor, a 19.1 kWh LFP battery for 160 km (about 99 miles) of CLTC electric range, and 2.82 L/100km (about 83 MPG) fuel consumption when the battery runs low, plus fast charging that takes the pack from 30 to 80 percent in 15 minutes.
Volkswagen has been squeezed by Chinese brands for years, but the ID.ERA 5S shows that a German brand willing to drop its stance and add value pricing plus smart driving can still win Chinese buyers, since an 89,900 yuan starting price, city NOA and a no-range-anxiety hybrid have together emptied the showrooms.
