Three Blown Tires in a Flash Flood, and a BYD Yangwang U8 Still Drove Its Owner to Safety

A thank-you letter circulating on Chinese social media this week reads like a survival story. The owner was driving his Yangwang U8 through the Sishilixia canyon in Yu County, Hebei province, when a flash flood struck and the river surged.

Rocks in the torrent blew out three of the SUV's four tires. The U8 kept moving, using its quad-motor e4 powertrain and tire-blowout stability control to carry the driver a critical distance to higher ground, where he waited out the danger.

The ordeal was far from over. Stranded deep in the canyon with poor phone signal and the flood still rising, the driver was out of options. Yangwang brand centers in Jinan, Beijing and Shijiazhuang then coordinated a cross-region emergency response, sending rescue staff overnight through muddy canyon roads while the river remained a threat. They brought him out safely.

The technology at the heart of the story is BYD's e4 platform, known in China as Yisifang. Each wheel gets its own motor, and the system can adjust torque at every corner 1,000 times per second. BYD says the setup can keep the vehicle stable after a single tire blowout at up to 75 mph.

Three shredded tires in a flash flood goes well beyond any design brief, but the redundancy of four independent motors still gave this driver enough mobility to escape the riverbed.

It is not the first time the U8 has shielded its owner in a disaster. In August 2025, a U8 caught in a mudslide in Kangding, Sichuan province kept its A, B, C and D pillars intact.

The Yangwang U8 starts at 1.098 million yuan, roughly $163,000. One real escape just proved that the only features truly worth paying for are the ones that protect the lives of the people inside.
