Tesla FSD Nearly Drove Off a Six-Story Parking Garage, Then Tried Again

Tesla owner Aryan Butala shared the close call on X this week. Driving to an HEB grocery store with FSD v14.3.7 engaged, his car climbed from the second floor of an open-air parking garage toward the top level.

Facing the thin wire mesh fencing that serves as the edge barrier, the vision-only system never flagged it as an obstacle, with no warning, no slowing and no braking as the car held a steady 4 mph toward the edge. Butala grabbed control and stopped with the wheels inches from a six-story fall.

The kicker is what happened next. After re-engaging FSD, the system immediately tried to drive through the fence again, as if it had found a shortcut to the ground floor.

To be fair, the owner himself kept the account honest. He noted the speed was only 4 mph, admitted that because he intervened, nobody knows whether the car would have stopped on its own, and added that the latest FSD build is usually exceptionally safe.

But the lesson here is logic, not outcome. Thin obstacles like wire mesh, cables and railings are a known weak point of camera-only perception, since cameras struggle to build reliable depth data from fine metal objects and undertrained systems simply ignore them.

The fact that a fresh activation repeated the exact same mistake points to a systematic blind spot, not a random glitch. NHTSA is already running an engineering-level investigation into FSD perception failures, and similar cases involving railroad crossing arms and thin metal barriers surface regularly.

Tesla's own manual states plainly that FSD is supervised assistance, not autonomy. This time, the driver is the one who made that disclaimer mean something.
