The Freelander 8, the first model from Chery Jaguar Land Rover's revived Freelander brand, launched on September 3 and pulled in more than 5,000 locked orders within 12 hours, building on over 10,000 refundable reservations made in the first 48 hours of pre-sales.
The SUV arrives in six trims across five- and six-seat layouts, with official prices from 309,900 to 399,900 yuan (about $46,100 to $59,500) and limited-time prices from 289,900 to 379,900 yuan (about $43,150 to $56,550), while buyers who place a 5,000 yuan (about $740) deposit before September 30 get up to 176,000 yuan (about $26,200) in launch benefits, bringing the effective entry price about 50,000 yuan below the pre-sale level and under the 300,000 yuan mark.
The Freelander 8 is a luxury all-terrain SUV measuring 5,118 mm (about 201 inches) long, 2,050 mm (about 81 inches) wide and 1,898 mm (about 75 inches) tall on a 3,040 mm (about 120 inches) wheelbase, built on an 800V range-extender platform with dual-motor all-wheel drive as standard, a combined 610 kW (about 818 hp) and 813 Nm (about 600 lb-ft) of torque, plus a 1.5-liter range extender and a 60.3 kWh battery developed with CATL that gives 310 km (about 193 miles) of CLTC electric-only range and a 20-to-80 percent fast charge in 12 minutes.
The headline tech is Huawei Qiankun ADS 5, making the Freelander 8 the first joint-venture luxury SUV to offer it as standard, running on a 4nm Snapdragon 8397 chip with 320 TOPS, while the MAX+ and limited first editions add the higher-level ADS 5 with an 896-line dual-path lidar that can spot a 14 cm (about 5.5 inch) object from 120 meters (about 394 feet) away.
Off-road is where Land Rover's 78-year pedigree shows up, with the segment's only triple-lock setup combining a front mechanical lock, rear e-lock and center electronic lock, plus rear-wheel steering of 10 degrees and a third-generation dual-chamber dual-valve magic carpet air suspension, while the i-ATS all-terrain system tuned with Huawei scans the road ahead and switches among nine terrain modes in 0.5 seconds.
The Freelander 8 is not aimed at hardcore off-roaders like the Tank 500, since its rivals are family six-seat range-extender SUVs such as the Li Auto L8 and Aito M8, and its play of mixing Land Rover's off-road DNA with Huawei's driver assist and an 800V range extender covers a dimension neither Li nor Aito touches, which may explain why 5,000 buyers locked in orders within half a day.
One explainer for readers outside China. 大定, or dading, means a firm locked-in order placed with a larger deposit that is typically non-refundable, while 小订, or xiaoding, is a small refundable reservation fee paid during pre-sales, so 5,000 dading represents 5,000 customers who have committed real money to a locked order.
