Fresh Off Beating Yamaha and Ducati in WorldSBK, China's ZXMOTO Gets EU Approval to Sell Bikes in Europe

TÜV Rheinland announced on August 13 that the ZXMOTO 500RR has been granted EU Whole Vehicle Type Approval by Luxembourg's Ministry of Transport, the first WVTA certificate for the Chinese brand, meaning the bike has passed the full set of EU safety and emissions tests and can be sold in all member states and other markets that recognize the certification.

The 500RR is ZXMOTO's first production model, unveiled at the Chongqing motorcycle expo in September 2024 and delivered to customers from March 2025. It packs an 83 hp inline four, a 146 mph top speed and a claimed 0 to 60 mph time of 3.4 seconds at 375 pounds wet, priced between 29,980 and 33,680 yuan (about $4,450 to $5,000) in China.

What made the name famous is racing. French rider Valentin Debise has taken six race wins this season in WorldSSP, the Supersport class running under the WorldSBK umbrella, repeatedly beating factory-backed Yamaha and Ducati machinery and making ZXMOTO the first Chinese manufacturer to win at this level.

The brand sits third in the manufacturers' standings, behind exactly those two giants. One distinction worth making, the race winner is the 820RR-RS, while the newly certified bike is the smaller 500RR street model.

The founder's story adds to the intrigue, as Zhang Xue went from apprentice mechanic to professional racer, co-founded Kove Moto in 2017, then left in 2024 to launch the brand carrying his own name, which has since landed exclusive backing from Sequoia China just two years in.

Some sobriety is warranted here, because a type approval is an entry ticket rather than a sales guarantee. ZXMOTO has no European dealer or service network yet, its EU pricing is unannounced, and replicating track glory with street bikes is a different game entirely.

Still, the path from contract manufacturing to certified entry into the EU looks increasingly like the playbook Chinese carmakers wrote before them.
