Did China Really Launch 600 New Cars in the First Half of 2026? Not Quite

The internet was buzzing that Chinese automakers dumped 500 to 600 new cars on the market in the first half of 2026, another proof point of the country's relentless competition. An expert just corrected the record.

Li Yanwei, an expert with the China Automobile Dealers Association, said on Thursday that China launched roughly 165 all-new models between January and June. The 500 to 600 figure, he explained, is a broad accounting that stacks every configuration and derivative of the same model. A single car with three trim levels counts as one model, not three. Only by multiplying 165 base models by their many configurations do you get to a few hundred products.

Even at 165, the pace is remarkable. For reference, the US market typically sees only a few dozen all-new models in a whole year. China averaged about 27 new models per month, most of them EVs, a cadence no other market comes close to.

The debate over the numbers says something about how the competition works. Once the 600-car story is unpacked into 165 models plus over 400 configuration variants, it shows Chinese automakers using trim-level product spread to create the impression of a product barrage, a differentiation play inside an intensely crowded market.

Police registration data shows where the fight is happening. EVs and plug-ins made up 49.42 percent of all new vehicle registrations in the first half of 2026, with 5.195 million new-energy vehicles registered. NEVs now account for 13.19 percent of China's 371 million-vehicle fleet.

Whether it is 165 or 600, the conclusion is the same. China remains the most competitive car market on Earth.
