China Now Has 23.68 Million EV Charging Points, Adding Over 20,000 Every Day

China's National Energy Administration released July 2026 charging infrastructure data on August 24. By the end of July, the country's total EV charging points reached 23.683 million, up 41.9% year on year.

Public charging points stand at 5.099 million, up 21.3%, with a combined rated capacity of 255 million kW and average power of about 49.97 kW per point. Private charging points total 18.584 million, up 48.8%, with connected capacity of 160 million kVA.

The monthly pace is the more striking figure. The total stood at 23.057 million at the end of June, meaning July alone added 626,000 points, over 20,000 per day, with private installations accounting for 85.6% of them.

There is no global benchmark for this speed. For comparison, the US Department of Energy counts roughly 253,000 public charging ports across the entire United States, so China's public network alone is about twenty times larger.

One structural detail is easy to miss. Private chargers make up 78.5% of the total and are growing 2.3 times faster than public ones. The real foundation of China's charging network is not the fast-charging plaza but the home charger in millions of private parking spots, an advantage that apartment-heavy North American housing can hardly replicate.

Highway service areas now host 85,400 charging points covering over 98% of locations, and under the national plan the network should exceed 40 million points by 2030, including about 300,000 high-power units.

Quantity is not the whole story, though. Average public charger power still sits under 50 kW, which already feels slow next to the 800V platforms and megawatt-charging cars hitting the market, and holiday queues on popular routes prove that distribution and power matter more than raw totals.
