Changan CS55 Hybrid Launches at $11,900: a 50 MPG SUV for Half of Toyota Money

The CS55 Blue Whale hybrid arrives in four trims with sticker prices of RMB 98,900 to 117,900, cut to RMB 79,900 to 103,900 ($11,900 to $15,400) under launch incentives.

It is the third model on Changan's Blue Whale hybrid system, and the company claims it is the world's first HEV SUV in the sub-RMB 80,000 class. Fittingly for a car built around efficiency, the entire launch event was a single three-minute video, no celebrities, no stage show.

The hardware is Changan's in-house iDE-H hybrid architecture. A 1.5-liter turbo engine making 148 hp runs at a peak thermal efficiency of 44.28%, paired with a 241 hp electric drive and an e-CVT.

It is a self-charging hybrid, so there is no plug and no gasoline particulate filter to worry about. City consumption is rated at 60 MPG (3.89 L/100 km), the WLTC combined figure is 50 MPG (4.68 L/100 km), and a full tank covers 932 miles (1,500 km), roughly half the fuel bill of a comparable gas SUV. First owners get a lifetime warranty on the hybrid core components.

At 179.1 inches long (4,550 mm) with a 104.6-inch (2,656 mm) wheelbase, the cabin packs a DeepSeek-powered voice assistant, and the top trim adds highway pilot assistance. Exports to Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Europe are already on the roadmap.

The fine print deserves a look, though. The $11,900 base car is largely a price anchor, and the volume seller will likely be the $14,800 mid trim.

The efficiency claim also depends on the test cycle, since its 50 MPG WLTC rating is roughly level with the Toyota Corolla Cross hybrid's 51 MPG, with the real advantage showing up in city driving and independent road tests.

And as a non-plug-in hybrid, it gets no green-plate EV perks in China. Still, the pricing is ferocious, Toyota's entry hybrid SUV there starts around $20,700, nearly double. Hybrid democratization is happening in China first, and the rest of the world gets to watch.
