Cadillac's New XT5 PHEV Gets a Chinese Brain, First to Run Momenta's R7 World Model

On August 12, Cadillac announced that the new XT5 PHEV is officially the first production luxury hybrid SUV equipped with Momenta's R7 world model, with its highway and urban driver assistance ready the moment the car is delivered, no later OTA update required, and show cars already in dealerships across the country.

According to the company, the Momenta R7 world model is billed as physical AI technology, first shown at the Beijing auto show this April, and its core idea is to move the system from perception to understanding. It was trained on 100 million curated data segments distilled from Momenta's 9.3 billion miles of real-world driving and refined through more than a hundred iterations before this first production fitment.

On the hardware side, the XT5 PHEV carries one lidar, three millimeter-wave radars, twelve ultrasonic sensors and eleven cameras, paired with a 320 TOPS driving-assistance chip, while a locally developed electronic architecture links perception, decision-making and execution in coordination with the Hummingbird chassis.

The car pairs a 1.5-liter turbo engine with front and rear motors in a plug-in hybrid setup making a combined 362 hp, matched with a 35.5 kWh Ultium 5C ternary lithium battery, 96 miles of WLTC electric range, combined fuel consumption of 39 MPG and 5C fast charging.

In the Chinese market, highway and urban driver assistance is already close to autonomous driving in everyday use, but the supporting regulations have yet to arrive, so the driver remains the person legally responsible for the vehicle.

An American luxury brand had never appeared in Momenta's partnership map before. The autonomous driving company, freshly listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange on July 8, has shipped more than 70 production models, holds over 200 design wins and has more than 800,000 vehicles on the road, with partners previously limited to Chinese domestic brands and a handful of joint ventures. Cadillac announced the first production R7 on the very day of that listing, which makes for quite the housewarming gift.

Compared with the likes of Huawei, Xpeng and Tesla in China, Momenta's driver assistance is not far behind and belongs in the same first tier, with functions covering daily commuting, automated parking, reverse tracking and narrow-road maneuvers.

Cadillac's Chinese brain does carry a note of resignation, since its in-house Super Cruise has nowhere near the presence of Huawei's Qiankun ADS or Tesla's FSD in the Chinese market, and with local sales under pressure year after year, turning to a domestic supplier for a crash course was simply the fastest option on the table.
