BYD launches Sealion 08 from $34,200 with up to 559 miles of range, air suspension standard

BYD's Ocean Series launched its first mid-size flagship SUV on September 2, with the Sealion 08 arriving in eight trims priced from 229,900 to 279,900 yuan (about $34,200 to $41,650), and it splits into two halves, a fully electric line and a plug-in hybrid line, each available in five- or six-seat layouts with front- or all-wheel drive.

The pricing is notable because BYD has almost erased the usual EV-to-PHEV premium, with the PHEV line starting around $34,200 and the EV around $35,700 while the top EV reaches about $41,650 and the top PHEV about $40,160, a spread of only about $7,400 across the entire range, and the front-drive Premium trims look positioned as the volume sellers while the four-wheel-drive Flagship trims carry the six-seat, all-wheel-drive premium.

Range is the headline figure, with the EV hitting up to 900 km (about 559 miles) of CLTC range on the five-seat Premium trim and 497 miles on the all-wheel-drive Flagship, and the PHEV reaching up to 249 miles of CLTC electric-only range on the Premium and 217 miles on the Flagship, all running on BYD's second-generation Blade Battery with flash charging that covers both long trips and daily commuting.

What stands out most is what BYD made standard, with the God's Eye B driver-assist system with lidar, the DiSus-A closed-chamber dual air suspension and rear-wheel steering fitted across every trim, so even the base model around $34,200 gets air suspension and rear-wheel steering, a combination that is rare in a mid-size SUV at this price.

The Sealion 08 follows BYD's Ocean Aesthetics 2.0 language with a full-width daytime running light meeting split headlamps, and it measures 5,115 mm (about 201 inches) long, 1,999 mm (about 79 inches) wide and 1,800 mm (about 71 inches) tall on a 3,030 mm (about 119 inches) wheelbase, with a 17.3-inch center screen, pearl-shell trim and full soft-touch coverage in high-touch areas, plus a 201-liter (about 7.1 cubic feet) front trunk and a 943-liter (about 33.3 cubic feet) rear trunk.

The Sealion 08 fills the biggest gap left in BYD's Ocean Series and drags air suspension, rear-wheel steering and flash charging down into the mid-$30,000 range, though its position against BYD's own Tang and the Denza N8 is not exactly sharp, so the standard air suspension and rear-wheel steering on every trim are the clearest reason to pick it, and the first 12 months of free flash charging does not hurt either.
