BYD Denza N8L EV debuts with 596 miles of range and a starting price under $44,700

Denza launched the N8L EV, its first full-size electric SUV, on September 14, with two trims, the Flash Charge Premium at 299,800 yuan (about $44,700) and the Flash Charge Flagship at 329,800 yuan (about $49,150).

The EV line starts at exactly the same price as the existing N8L plug-in hybrid, which runs from 299,800 to 349,800 yuan (about $52,130), coming in well below the 320,000 to 380,000 yuan range the industry had predicted, another case of BYD putting high specs and low prices on the table. The two trims differ by 30,000 yuan, with the flagship adding smart electric doors and a high-definition streaming rearview mirror.

The headline is range, since a 130.15 kWh second-generation Blade Battery gives the N8L EV 960 km (about 596 miles) of CLTC range, the longest of any six-seat electric SUV in the world, and it supports 9-minute flash charging, a pairing that tries to resolve the usual trade-off between big batteries and fast charging.

The body measures 5,200 mm long, 1,999 mm wide and 1,820 mm tall on a 3,075 mm wheelbase with a 2+2+2 six-seat layout, while the 9-minute charging, God's Eye 5.0 advanced driver assist, DiSus-A air suspension with 10 degrees of rear-wheel steering and the six-screen Didi Xia AI cockpit lift its intelligence to another level.

Inside, the cabin packs a 50-inch Phoenix Wings AR head-up display, a 13.2-inch instrument cluster, a 17.3-inch central screen, a 13.2-inch passenger screen, a 17.3-inch rear entertainment screen and a 9-inch streaming rearview mirror, all running on a Qualcomm 8295P chip with six-screen interaction.

With 960 km of range and a starting price under 300,000 yuan, the Denza N8L EV pushes the price floor for full-size electric SUVs down another notch, and with range-extenders and plug-in hybrids still fighting for share, it wants a big battery to prove an EV can outrun a gas car, though whether buyers agree will show in whether the N8L EV can repeat the sales success of its plug-in sibling.
