On October 21, Aito's user service WeChat account released a statement on the accident, saying preliminary checks show the car was in human driving mode when it reached the intersection at 139.1 km/h (about 86 mph) in a zone limited to 50 km/h (about 31 mph), and the excessive speed caused it to hit a square traffic light pillar and catch fire at the front, with no anomalies seen before the crash.
On the cause of the fire, Aito says a preliminary analysis points to the front bay suffering a violent impact at high speed, which caused wiring shorts and fluid leaks that ignited. The vehicle's emergency call system triggered and connected immediately after the crash, while Aito's roadside assistance center called 122 to report the accident and help with rescue, and the company says it is fully cooperating with the investigation, with the detailed conclusion to be based on the official final findings.
On October 21, Shenmu police said the incident was a single-vehicle accident with only the driver on board, who was killed, and the local traffic police are still investigating.
Aito also noted false online claims of a battery explosion and driver assist being involved, asking the public to view the matter rationally and not spread rumors. Based on what has been disclosed so far, this was a high-speed single-vehicle crash in human driving mode with the fire starting at the front of the car rather than in the battery pack, so any simple attribution to the battery or driver assist lacks support until the final investigation is complete.
