25 years, 1 million Porsches in China, and four straight years of falling sales

Porsche officially delivered its one-millionth vehicle in mainland China on September 13 at a sports car day event at the Porsche Experience Center Shanghai, which drew more than 1,200 fans and over 400 Porsches, with several GT models on display as the brand marked the milestone.

From entering China in 2001 to passing one million cumulative deliveries, Porsche took 25 years in a market where it opened its first center in Beijing and then saw sales climb steadily, with China becoming its largest single market for eight consecutive years and peaking in 2021 at 95,671 vehicles, a third of its global volume.

Since 2022, however, Porsche's China sales have fallen for four straight years, dropping 2.5 percent to 93,300 vehicles in 2022, 15 percent to 79,300 in 2023, 28 percent to just 56,900 in 2024 and 26 percent to 41,900 in 2025, a decline of more than 56 percent from the 2021 peak.

The slide has continued into 2026, with first-quarter deliveries of just 7,519 vehicles, down 21 percent, and first-half deliveries of 14,501, down 32 percent, making China the worst-performing single market for Porsche worldwide, while North America overtook China as its largest market back in 2023 and Porsche is now reworking its Chinese dealer network to match the smaller volumes.

One million cars is a 25-year milestone, but the curve tells two stories, with eight straight years as the world's biggest single market followed by four years of halving, and China's luxury market is rewriting the rules as domestic premium brands stretch performance, intelligence and price at the same time, leaving Porsche to defend not just sales but the brand premium that once went unquestioned.
